Couple obtain lawyer for defamation case
A couple facing over two hundred charges connected to allegations of defamation and harassment using electronic devices have obtained the services of a lawyer to represent them in Court.
So’oau Vaa and Maylynn Brown appeared before the District Court on Tuesday for the second time to answer to the multiple charges against them.
They were represented by lawyer Mauga Precious Chang while the prosecutor is Inspector Seiuli Richard Ah Ching.
Presiding over the matter is District Court Judge, Talasa Atoa Saaga.
Mauga sought an adjournment so she can obtain instructions from the defendants on their plea against the charges.
The court was also informed that the prosecution is also yet to finalise the charges.
Judge Saaga adjourned the matter to 12th December next week and the defendants are on bail pending the proceedings.
The couple face 253 charges with the possibility of additional charges on allegations of harassment using an electronic device, insulting words and defamation against senior officers from the Ministry of Police.
So’oau and his wife have been vocal against senior police officers including the Police Commissioner over their handling of the unsolved death of Tu’uau Fa’asavalu in 2021.
The couple made allegations against the officials on a social media program they host called “Tu Manu ae le Tu Logologo”.
In one of their social media posts the defendants alleged the Police Commissioner and other senior officers tried to cover up a senior politician they claim is responsible for the death of the teenager.
The couple have been restricted by the Court to make any more controversial social media posts.
