While most children were either spending a day at the beach with their families or at Sunday Schools' sports day on the public holiday for White Sunday, Alesana Lasalo was enjoying his time at sea more with his two dogs and fishing.

The nine-year-old boy from Fagalii was fishing with his two dogs for his catch of the day on the shores of Fagalii when Samoa Observer drove by on Monday. He took his father's fishing gear, a sack and took to the sea early in the morning.

In an interview with the Samoa Observer, Alesana said his siblings and cousins whom he lives with were at a sports day at their church for the Sunday school to celebrate White Sunday but he chose to skip it and go out to fish.

"This is not my first time to fish and I learned from my father and ever since, I have enjoyed fishing when I get the chance to," he said.

"My other siblings are at a sports day at church but I came here to catch some fish. I don't really enjoy eating fish but I love fishing and I love that if I get some fish, my family will eat them.

"I am hoping to get more fish so I can bring home to my mom who cooks it and I enjoy my mother's cooking. That's another exciting part.

"I don't regret not going to the sports day because this is more fun to me and I want to become better at fishing when I grow up."

It was around 10am on Monday when this newspaper spoke with the aspiring fisherman who was fishing, he had already caught two and they were in the sack ready for the oven.

When asked about his White Sunday experience, the nine-year-old said it was exciting as his parents bought him a new suit to wear to church and he did his recital to thank his parents for their love and support.
