Seven athletes attend Commonwealth Youth Games
Seven Samoan athletes are representing the country at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Caribbean which officially got underway last Friday.
The games are being held in the Caribbean island state of Trinidad and Tobago and are the seventh edition. The 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games is an international youth sporting event for member states of the Commonwealth. It will run from 4–11 August 2023 and is a delayed event similar to the 2020 Summer Olympics and the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games are the first to be held since the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the accession of King Charles III as Head of the Commonwealth and the reigning monarch of the Commonwealth realms last October. They are also the first to be held in the Caribbean.
The games were initially planned to be held in 2021 from 1–7 August but were postponed to this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Team Samoa consists of seven athletes from athletics and swimming. The Team Samoa management is made up of swimming coach Suzie Schuster, athletics coach Nonu Ah Chong Sam Chong, and is led by the Chef de Mission, Sula Tagifano So’onalole-Sam Chong, and General Team Manager Sifuiva Maureen Epati-Tuimaleali’ifano
