Torrential rain on Friday and clogged drains made a bad cocktail as vehicles had to make way through flooded roads in Apia and the Sapapalii Ford overflowed in Savai as the river raged causing vehicles to come to a halt

Members of the public witnessed vulnerable areas such as Savalalo and Fugalei with severe flooding situations causing vehicles to become stranded causing traffic amid a busy road around 8pm on Friday evening.

The Met Office had issued a heavy rain and flood warning.

"The active cloud band associated with the trough of low pressure just southwest of Samoa. This band of clouds will continue to bring occasional showers and gusty periods across Samoa through tomorrow," the Met Office stated.

"Hence, the upgrading of the Heavy Rain Advisory into a Heavy Rain Warning and the issuing of the Flood Warning is mandatory to reflect the current conditions and for safety precautions.

"The strong high-pressure system to the far south of Southern Cooks continues to maintain waves and swell heights at 3-4 meters.

"These swells are expected to fall below 3 meters tomorrow and will continue to diminish below the advisory threshold by the weekend. Therefore, a Marine Warning remains enforced for all marine waters of Samoa.

"Potential Impacts: Strong currents and rough seas, fresh and gusty winds at times."

Meanwhile, the Land and Transport Authority (L.T.A.) has also been updating the country of the vulnerable areas that have been hit hard by the floods as well as traffic lights that have been down due to the severe weather.

"We wish to inform the public that Pesega Traffic Lights are down. This is due to a malfunction to the programming system caused by strong lighting," L.T.A cautioned.

"Due to severe weather conditions in Upolu and Savaii, the Land Transport Authority advises all travelers to driver with caution as slippery roads and over mountain passes, pooling near roadsides and waterways and possible landslides. Please turn on your vehicle lights and ensure the safety of every road use."

However, L.T.A also informed that Sasina village in Savaii is safe for transportation by transporters.
