SJAA president, executives reappointed
The Samoa JICA Alumni Association (SJAA) President and three other executive committee members have been re-appointed for another term of office.
The reappointments were made at the 25th Annual General Meeting at the Lava Hotel in Sogi with the Association President Matofai Mata’u Esau Lotu and three other executive committee members getting reappointed. The guest of honour at the AGM was the Resident Representative of JICA Samoa Office, Yumiko Asakuma.
The meeting was also attended by former participants of the JICA related short and long-term training and masters degree scholarships graduate recipients of JICA SDGs program.
Ms. Asakuma, in her keynote address at the annual general meeting, extended a warm welcome to new members and congratulated the Association.
She expressed her appreciation towards the members and the executive committee for their unwavering dedication and focus amidst the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ms. Asakuma also highlighted the resumption of JICA training and the volunteer program while also acknowledging the strong friendship and partnership between the Governments of Japan and Samoa.
The 50th anniversary of the JOCV/Volunteer Program celebrated last year was also highlighted with Ms. Asakuma noting that the 50th anniversary of strong diplomatic ties between both Governments will be celebrated this year.
“I am sure the association will contribute further friendship and partnership between the two countries” she said.
Matofai expressed his gratitude as the re-elected Association President for the support from both Japan and the Samoa Governments.
He then reflected on the Association's progress from April 2021 to March 2023, noting that a lot had been achieved during a period when many groups and associations had their plans delayed or dismissed.
He also highlighted the success of the career day which he described as an initiative for future leaders, children and now an annual major event for the Association.
The career day involved the JICA Office, the Embassy of Japan and numerous Government ministries, agencies and private organisations.
“These joint efforts strengthen SJAA as we appreciate the inputs that different sources brought to our association, and with wider involvement, we increased the impact of our efforts," said Matofai.
