The American Ambassador to Samoa took time out during his six-day visit to call into some of the country's popular tourism sites on the big island of Savai'i.

Tom Udall, who is based in the New Zealand capital Wellington, was in Samoa from 9-14 February for the official opening of a new American Corner in Savai'i and the ava welcome ceremony for the seven new U.S. Peace Corps volunteers.

While in Savai'i, following the conclusion of the formalities, Mr. Udall visited the Saleaula lava field, where he saw the devastation caused by the lava more than 100 years ago that affected the community and the churches in the area.

He was also shown the Virgin’s Grave, which was discovered to be unaffected by lava, where he also paid his respects according to a statement released by the Embassy on Wednesday.

To wrap up his Savai’i trip, Mr. Udall visited the Sapapalii Mangroves Reserve, which was funded by a USAID Project and is focused on adaptation and conservation of the coastline. The program also promotes the environmental benefits of mangroves to the community and marine life.

On Monday this week, the Ambassador met with the Minister of Education Sports and Culture, Seuula Ioane as part of a follow-on discussion on the partnership between Samoa and the U.S. on areas of mutual interest including education.

Later in the day he enjoyed reading to students aged 5 to 10 years old at the Asaga Primary School. The Ambassador also presented some reading books and educational materials to add to the school library's collection.

“It is always exciting to receive new books and resources to add to the children’s learning,” said the Asaga Primary School Principal, Perosi Viliamu.

During the launching of the American Corner in Savai'i, students from Salelologa Primary School sang a thank you hymn and performed a celebratory Samoan dance, as a gesture of gratitude on behalf of the Ministry of Education Sports and Culture (MESC) and schools in Savai’i.

“This American Corner will have a positive impact on the community as well as continue to promote education, literacy, and numeracy," added the Minister.

"It will bridge the gap between students in Samoa and the world by providing access to information."
