Samoan language taught at Stanford University
Anyone who attends Stanford University can now learn the Samoan language regardless of their race, thanks to the hard work of two Samoan students.
Ari Patu and Brandy Atuatasi who with a passion to promote and understand their culture more, have successfully endorsed the inclusion of the Samoan language in the University's curriculum and the first class started Monday last week.
The classes will be taught by Tali'ilagi Young and her son Chris Young, a mother and son duo who have a strong Fa'asamoa instilled in their family and are willing to share it to the world through teaching the Samoan culture and language.
Mr. Patu who only recently uncovered things about his culture which he never knew existed, is willing to keep learning and is excited for this milestone.
"My motivation was simply love. My love for my culture and people run bone-deep, and so an opportunity to bring that here was really a blessing from the Lord," he said.
"Another huge reason is just wanting to learn more about my culture, who I am, where I come from, my language and more. I know that there's a lot I don't know about and I can't find out."
Ms. Atuatasi expressed proudness to witness students with and without Samoan blood providing positive feedback about learning the Samoan language since it started last week.
"Our language and our culture is worth fighting for. Anyone who desires to speak Samoan and be immersed in the culture is essential," she said.
"Everyone in the class has expressed their excitement to finally have this opportunity to learn Samoan. We're so grateful to have this class here and it's truly a blessing."
Not only the Samoan language, but more about the Samoan culture will be taught in the newly established class at the institute.
Stanford University is a private research university in Stanford, California which is among the largest in the United States. It has a roll of over 17,000 students and is considered among the most prestigious universities in the world.
