Safata Lua starts 25,000 tree planting project
Agroforestry is one way the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (M.N.R.E.) hopes to combat and provide resilience from climate change.
As part of the Ministry's project, Safata Lua was given tools to put to action the plan to plant 25,000 trees. It is one is one of 10 districts in the project to receive $20,000 tala worth of tools and equipment from the M.N.R.E. for the development of land, making it suitable for planting trees and maintaining it.
With this donation, each district is given the task of planting 25,000 trees which will boost the health of plant life in Samoa in efforts to combat climate change.
The Safata No. 2 M.P. Laumatiamanu Mathew Purcell accepted the equipment comprising wheelbarrows, chainsaws, machetes, spades and other tools to help with the clearing of the land.
The M.P. also kept his promise to four primary schools and made a donation of $1,000 tala to each of the schools – he believes that one good deed deserves another and presented the money to the school principals.
"We were lucky to have our proposal accepted by the M.N.R.E. There is low forestry in Samoa and this project is beneficial for Samoa's forestry development like bring back the Laau Samoa," he said.
The village council met and provided land suitable for the project. This is also a great opportunity of employment for the villagers as the maintaining of the plants will earn the village wages.
The Safata district will now be a part of the ongoing project run by M.N.R.E. in growing healthy forestry for Samoa.
