Australia present medals to Samoans for cyber work

Two of Samoa's very own have been recognised by the Australian Government for their work and commitment in the cyber world especially with security.

Recognition medals were awarded to Miriama Betham-Malielegaoi and Laulu Angelo Chan Mow.

Ms. Betham is the acting Chief Executive Officer of the protocol division in the Ministry of Foreign affairs and Trade and Mr. Angelo is the acting Chief Executive Officer of information and communication with the Samoa Police Services. 

Cyber Safety Pacific a program led by the Australian Police aims to up-skill police officers on cybercrime investigations while also increasing cyber safety awareness and education for the local communities within the pacific region. 

Their participation in the CSP had increased their skills in cyber safety and in making sure that Samoa’s cyber capability is up to date in response to the changing nature of cyber threats.

Ms. Betham, contributed to the UN Open Ended Working Group on Cyber as part of the Women in Cyber Fellow Program ensuring improved global outcomes.

The Australian High Commissioner Emily Luck recognised the efforts the two put in their cyber work in protecting Samoa from threats.

“We warmly congratulate Betham-Malielegaoi and Laulu for their stellar work in cyber,” she said.

“We recognise the work of people like Ms. Betham and Laulu to build a safer and resilient Samoa as we deal with cyber threats. The Australian government will continue to support Samoa through cyber initiatives for a safer pacific region."

According to a fraud detection company called SEON, cyber-attacks around the world have increased by 29 per cent. The report found that groups that employ ransomware tactics have entered a new age, with the use of extortion growing at a breakneck pace of 93 per cent in less than a year.
