FAST Govt. responds to HRPP: As it began, so shall it end!

Dear Editor,

In response to the Leader of the Opposition’s letter to the Editor of the Samoa Observer of 15 February 2025, it is important to clarify that this is yet another attempt by Tuilaepa and the HRPP to manufacture a constitutional crisis where none exists.

His claims are based on misrepresentations, political spin, and a continued refusal to accept the democratic process.

Let us clarify further below:

1. There Is No Constitutional Crisis

Tuilaepa’s claims that Samoa is in a constitutional crisis is somewhat far-fetched given that the Government continues to function, Parliament continues to sit, and the legal framework remains intact. His assertions are designed to create confusion and instability.

Under Prime Minister Fiame’s Leadership, Cabinet decisions are being made, policies are being implemented, and the Government is working to serve the people. The suggestion that Fiame is holding onto power with only five MPs is a complete fabrication meant to mislead the public.

2. Political Realities, Not Legal Emergencies

Political disagreements within a party do not equate to a constitutional crisis. In any democracy, parties experience internal debates and shifting alliances. This is not unusual, nor does it invalidate the government’s mandate.

Tuilaepa conveniently ignores the fact that his party, HRPP, had internal disputes and tried to remove him as their leader as of late last year.  The difference is that HRPP’s method of handling dissent was to silence those who disagreed, whereas FAST remains committed to open dialogue and democratic processes.

3. The Prime Minister’s Authority Is Secure

Tuilaepa’s argument that a Prime Minister must resign when they do not have the confidence of 27 MPs is a misreading of the Constitution. A motion of no confidence is the only mechanism to determine whether a Prime Minister retains parliamentary support - not media speculation or opposition declarations.

If HRPP believes Fiame does not have majority support, they are free to test this claim in Parliament through a formal motion, rather than attempting to pressure constitutional offices and the judiciary to do their political bidding.

4. HRPP’s History of Losing in Court

Tuilaepa boasts about HRPP winning legal battles against the Speaker, yet he neglects to mention the many times his party has lost in court, including him being convicted for contempt of Court. His track record since 2021 has been one of legal failures and obstructionist tactics. When HRPP does not get its way, it rushes to court, not as a defender of the Constitution but as a sore loser trying to overturn democratic decisions.

5. FAST Government Acknowledges Mistakes and Learns from Them

The FAST Government is not perfect, and we acknowledge that we have made mistakes. However, we have learned from them and continue to improve governance for the benefit of Samoa. The same cannot be said for Tuilaepa, who refuses to acknowledge HRPP’s past failures. If he truly wishes to act as a genuine elder statesman, he should behave as one - not manipulate events to create unnecessary stress for families and businesses already struggling with uncertainty and fear. Samoa needs solutions, not more political manoeuvring.

From blaming the FAST Government for power outages - when outages were frequent under HRPP as well - to criticizing the rising cost of living, Tuilaepa conveniently forgets that these issues have always existed in Samoa, including under his leadership. The reality is that the whole world is experiencing unprecedented inflation due to the pandemic and supply chain constraints. Rather than using scare tactics, HRPP should focus on offering real solutions.

6. The Real Agenda: Forcing an Early Election

HRPP’s push for a snap election is not about protecting democracy - it is about trying to regain power through manipulation. Tuilaepa knows that the people rejected his leadership in 2021, and he fears that the longer the FAST Government governs, the more the public will see the benefits of a new, transparent, and accountable administration.

By creating confusion and spreading misinformation, Tuilaepa is attempting to destabilize the nation to serve his political interests.

Conclusion: FAST Government Will Continue to Govern Responsibly

Samoa deserves leaders who focus on governance, not political theatre. The FAST Government remains committed to delivering results, ensuring economic stability, and upholding democratic principles.

While Tuilaepa and HRPP continue their campaign of negativity and deception, the FAST Government will remain focused on serving the people and moving Samoa forward. The people of Samoa deserve progress, not a return to the arrogance and divisive tactics of HRPP’s 40-year rule.

Tuilaepa’s predictions of a government collapse is wishful thinking. The FAST Government will not be distracted by baseless accusations and political games. Instead, we will continue to lead with integrity, stability, and a vision for Samoa’s future.
