Animals as part of the family
Around the world, animals are more than just pets, they are cherished members of the family. Whether providing companionship, protection, or assistance in daily life, animals bring immense value to households. Many people consider their pets as important as any human family member, offering love, support, and even practical help.
Animals provide comfort and reduce stress. Dogs and cats, for example, are known for their loyalty and affection. Studies have shown that spending time with pets can improve mental health by reducing anxiety and depression. Certain animals, like dogs, serve as natural protectors. They guard homes and alert their owners of intruders. Some animals, like geese, are also known for their strong territorial instincts and can serve as effective guards.
In our nation, care for animals is a concern. We have seen in many cases, pets are neglected and deprived of medical care and sometimes even food. Hygiene is also an issue. However, the number one issue is the stray dog problem. There are too many dogs because some owners like to keep dogs but do not take the initiative to de-sex their dogs and cats to control their population.
Because of that, there are so many stray dogs around. The strays and even those belonging to people are being allowed to have a free roam of the streets. Some of these dogs being territorial often become a danger to pedestrians. That is why we have people walking around with golf clubs and sticks.
The Animal Protection Society is there to help pet owners. They have veterinary care and at times organise community clinics where they have overseas volunteers perform de-sexing at no cost. The real solution to the stray dog problem is controlling their unwanted population. Dogs can breed every six months and therefore exponentially increase in population. If they are indeed family, proper care must be taken.
Throughout history, animals have played essential roles in human work. Horses and donkeys assist with transportation and farming, while dogs help herd livestock. In some regions, trained animals like elephants and camels are still used for labour and travel. Many cultures have deep connections with animals. Cows are considered sacred in Hindu traditions, while cats have historical significance in Egyptian culture. Animals are often central to rituals, celebrations, and traditional practices worldwide.
Taking care of a pet teaches children responsibility, empathy, and discipline. Feeding, grooming, and playing with animals help children develop kindness and a sense of duty from a young age. Dogs, cats, horses, birds, fish, and small animals like rabbits or guinea pigs all play unique roles in families, offering companionship, emotional support, and even therapeutic benefits.
Animals are not just creatures we care for, they are family. They provide love, security, and support, enriching our lives in countless ways. By treating animals with kindness and respect, families around the world create strong, lifelong bonds with their animal companions.
