Life is tough

Life is quite hard in Samoa.

That is the opinion of To’omaga Pati, 87 years old from Falelatai.

He told the Village Voice that we have so many different goods from overseas in our country today, and at the same time, the prices keep increasing.

“Samoa is not the same anymore when we compare it to the past years,” said To’omaga.

“There are lot of changes in our country and the cost of living keeps increasing as well.

“We have to prepare for the worst in years to come.

“Now that we are at the beginning of the year, a time when we pay our children’s school fees, taking care of our families and not forgetting countless fa’alavelave.

“And not only within our families, but also within our villages and churches as well.

“But that’s normal for us here in Samoa to have fa’alavelave and family commitments and we can’t do much about it.

“But that’s what I mean about the cost of living being very expensive nowadays.

But he wasn’t totally pessimistic.

“Despite all the failures and problems in life especially the high cost of living that we’re now facing - God is still in control,” he said.

“That doesn’t stop us from moving forward, that doesn’t stop us from trusting that there’s always calm at the end of the storm.

“We still work together many times and I believe this is the key to a successful family.

“Maybe we’re poor when people look at us, but we have the courage to cope with life through prayers.

“Setting good examples to our children of how to develop their family when they grow older is something that we’re looking at now to teach our children.

“I think working together is the key to the changes we have today in the cost of living.

“We need to work on our lands, and make good use of our times in whatever calling that we’re working in now.”
