Talent doesn’t always mean you will be successful, but you have a chance to compete.

This was highlighted in the 2018 Champ of Champ Athletics Competition at Apia Park, yesterday.

Over 30 colleges from around Upolu and Savai’i competed in six divisions for boys and girls in the junior, intermediate, and senior for track and field events.

Falealili College went away with the junior girls division, while Chanel College took the intermediate girls division whereas Church College Pesega stole the senior division’s title.

It was an intense atmosphere with all competitors playing for gold to represent and make their schools proud.

Saint Joseph’s College dominated the junior boys division, while Leifiifi College ruled the intermediate division and making Church College Vaiola the overruling senior boys’ division champions.

President of the 2018 Champ of Champs Organising Committee, Matafeo Seinafolava Reupena Matafeo spoke about the significance of this annual athletic competition for athletes to showcase their talents and uplift the level of their skillsets.

“We will select the top team from this year’s games and they will work with the Athletics Samoa team so they can be introduced to professional training.

“An issue we hope will not happen this year is the dishonesty from schools concerning their athletes. It was evident in previous years that some schools used overaged players to participate in certain divisions. But thankfully it did not happen this year. The organizing committee made sure that such incidents do not occur.

“At the end of the day, not all players will acquire first place, this is why it is important that all schools must come together in harmony and avoid resorting to violence,” Matafeo said.

The government paid for all the facilities used throughout all the zones while Samoa Stationaries and Books provided trophies for the six division winners.
