Secondhand shopping, also called thrift shopping, has grown in popularity in Samoa in recent years and for many it is not a choice but what they can afford.

In addition to saving money, many people in the nation have embraced the idea of purchasing used goods at a tenth of the price of new ones to balance their budgets and save money.

Thrift stores offer a unique selection not often seen in regular retail stores, which is one of the main reasons why many Samoans love to shop there as well.

Thrift stores to some offer a treasure of electronics, antique apparel, unique home decor and branded clothes.

Speaking with the Samoa Observer, Sisifo Uelese a father of two said he buys second-hand clothes for his sons. He said it was suitable to buy from thrift stores as his budget can be very tight these days.

"It's cheap, very convenient and mostly because my financial budget is quite tight and I can't afford brand new ones. These pants look just fine for my boys and they also look brand new to me. I am very grateful and there are cheaper options for average consumers," said Sisifo Uelese.

29-year-old Tuluina Tavita stated that she flies out on Monday to a much colder environment. She said she chose to thrift as her budget blew up over things she bought for her trip. She said she usually frequents second hand shops ever since they were introduced to Samoa.

"Today I'm here to find jackets and jumpers as I'll fly to New Zealand next week. I'm glad that there are cheaper places like Mamas and Ross where we can try and find warmer wears for this climate transition I'll be headed to," she said.

"I can easily budget my money, the cheapest places that can help me get some materials and things that almost look brand new."

To some people thrift shopping also provides a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional retail shopping. By opting for second hand items, consumers are reducing the demand for new products, which helps to decrease the amount of waste generated from manufacturing and packaging.

Mane Sapolu is always on the hunt for new items, especially construction electronics like drills and chainsaws. He stated that he would find many tools three times cheaper than many retail stores.

"Most of the electronics I find are in very good condition and it's hard to believe that they are hidden in these shops, ever since then I would rather buy from second hand stores and garage sales than buy from retail outlets."

For most customers who indulge in second hand shopping are constrained by budget. It is the cheaper option as many are not able to afford the price of brand new items.

When prices are compared, a pair of shorts can be bought for as little as $7 compared to almost $50 when brought brand new. The minimum wage rate has remained the same and the cost of living keeps on increasing.
