Public call for Games medalists to be rewarded
Sole Pito, 21, Vaiusu-Tai
"The Government should still give them some money, because it is their strength that was used to represent Samoa at these Commonwealth Games. They should treat them well because they know that they went to represent Samoa and promoted our country."
Time Zen, 19, Lefaga
"I know that their parents will be upset that their children aren't getting something for their effort at the Commonwealth Games besides their medals. They competed on behalf of our country and they should all be equally rewarded for their hard work, even if they did not get any medals or placing, they should still be awarded for their effort and it doesn't have to be big just a little token of appreciation."
Leitu Lelevaga, 41, Utualii
"It's not fair because they're in a competition and they're using all their might to compete for the gold medals. They were competing for our country and at least they've obtained the silver medals. Even if they didn't get medals, they should at least get a thousand dollars, something like that."
Fuatai Bahn, 43, Vaiusu
"It is something that we should do for our children who left to compete. It's something that we must do because all their strength is going in to competing in the Commonwealth Games and they should get some monetary reward which can help out with their family needs. The athletes that got gold and silver medals should at least get something in return."
Victor Pesamino, 21, Togafuafua
"The gold medalist is getting rewarded and the others should be awarded too. We all know that these Commonwealth Games are of a bigger league than the ones we have here. They should absolutely be rewarded because this Games are not fun children's games and the medals they get from these high level games are very valuable. They travel far from home to compete and they have put so much time and effort and are rewarded with these medals and it's not fair for any of them to not be rewarded."
Eli Moimoi, 25, Vaivase
"I think that all the athletes should get something in return for their efforts of representing Samoa out on the big stage. It's not easy to be away from home and to compete in front of strangers. They have put in so much time away from their families to train and if they don't get something in return, they would be disheartened to continue. They should get some financial support, obviously not the same as the gold medal, but something to repay them for their efforts in taking Samoa's name far and representing the 685."
