Public wary of new elections

“Samoa is known as a chosen country with the motive, ‘Fa’avae i le Atua Samoa’ (God the foundation of Samoa).  The answer to the 2021 General Election is from God; while parties are [in tensions over] who the winning party should be I believe God will give the answer for. There should not be another election for Samoa. Go as it is and see which party wins.”

Semau Amosa Iakopo, 60, Patamea Savaii

“A re-election should not be done. There will be many wrongdoings when there’s upcoming re-election. We should wait for final decisions from court cases without pushing through with a re-election. Samoa will face a lot of challenges and troubles if there’s another election; people will cause trouble to seek which party shall win.“

Sita Auvae, 62, Vaimea

“The 2021 General Election is so disappointing so there should be a re-election, to ensure which party will win. Before there were 51 seats in the Parliament and now 52. By having a re-election there will be a Government of Samoa. [The Human Rights Protection Party] has been doing a lot of good for our country and community for years, so why not let the F.A.S.T. party [Faatuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi] be in power? The Honourable Tuilaepa Sailele Malieilegaoi, please take a rest from governing our country.“

Vitoria Nansen, 55, Leauva’a

“There should be a re-election. The addition of a female candidate [to Parliament] is not right. Members of the public were only waiting for Tuala’s decision. By running a re-election the country will then know which exact party will come [into] power.”

Talifeau Sio, 69, Lotofaga

“The Commissioner of the Electoral Office Commission has no right to choose candidates, it should be given to the court and that is where the final decision comes from. The F.A.S.T. party would have won, but the Government is not right and true at all, so the F.A.S.T. party must take over now. There should not be a re-election because it is clear to us that the F.A.S.T. party has won, but H.R.P.P. cannot accept the fact that they lost. [They are] using their power to gain back the Government but God can see what’s in every individual’s heart.”

Lauano Aukuso Ah-Ching, 57, Sinamoga

“Only God knows the truth. If our country is having a re-election I believe its God’s decision. We should have a re-election, to find out which exact party wins. Leaders of our country should bring peace but instead, they are the ones who stirred things up; they know what’s right and need to be done but turned a blind eye on it.”
