“As students are on school campuses, their safety becomes the responsibility of the teachers and when they leave the campus, they are responsible for their own safety until they reach home and go under the protection of their guardians. Teachers swear that the safety of students is in their hands so there is no excuse whatsoever if something happens to students under their care.”

Misipelema Leilua, 71, Malaemalu

“Teachers are responsible for every student in school, it is their job to look after and take good care of the students while they are away from home. They should also look into the safety of the students while they are playing on the field, but sometimes teachers stay indoors and the students are unsupervised, opening the possibility for a child to get hurt. “

Palea'i Uilio, 36, Moamoa

“It all starts within a family and also there is a law concerning the rights of a child which forbids teachers from belting students. If only teachers are allowed to discipline disobedient students, things would have been less hard. Also if a child is brought up in a good family with good manners and behaves well then everything would be fine. It all depends on the student’s attitude shown in school, but the safety of the students is in the hands of the teachers.”

Malia Tarcko, 24, Amaile

“The teachers' responsibility is to ensure the safety of the students and to look after them while they are at school. As children when they are at home, their parents are responsible for their safety. The teachers are also responsible for bring peace if students are in conflict."

Faleafa Kamahl, 42, Alafua

“Parents aren’t available to look after their children while being left with teachers at school. The principal and teachers are responsible for the safety of students while they are away from their parents. But if a child is well behaved and got good manners, then the supervision of the teacher is not needed.”

Saumamao Ioane, 65, Satuimalufilufi

"As soon as the students enter the school's compound, the teachers take responsibility for the students and make sure they are safe. The teachers' responsibility is to ensure the safety and the well being of a student, it is their job to take care of the students while their parents are absent."
