Street Talk: What is your New Year's Resolution?

Losing weight, getting married, going to school or making a mover overseas. What is your New Year's resolution? Samoa Observer journalist Sulamanaia Manaui Faulalo spoke to people about what they plan in the New Year.

Mose Iosua, 18, Tuamoa Uta.

“I’ve just finished taking the SSLC government exam at Wesley College, and now I am just waiting on the results to see whether I did well or not. If I did well, I will continue my schooling in the new year, looking at either university or wherever it will take me in the following years to come.”

Sefuluai Aiatia, 27, Tanumagala

“My New Year’s resolution would be to continue running my business to find a source of income to support my family. The first job I worked at paid me, but the money was only enough to cover food. However, with my business, even though people look down on what I do and how I run it, the money I receive from this business is more than what I made when I was working. Now, what I receive in three to four days is what I used to make in a week. This is why I will continue pushing my business in the New Year.”

Viliamu Ah Sam, 40, Vaitele Uta

“Firstly, all glory goes to God for another day. To any Samoan, wherever you may be based and reading this, all glory to God. For my plans in the New Year, I plan on leaving it to God. If it wasn’t for God, I wouldn’t be here. As for my family especially my children, I want to keep getting them ready and prepared for the school year ahead. I will put my children and family first, as well as organising the plans for the village and one of my kids who is getting married.”

Aumalosi Saiasi Tufanua, 46, Saleimoa

“For our family, we have many plans in the New Year, and tomorrow we will wrap up our day's work before flying out to New Zealand in the second week of January.” Aumalosi’s family has been granted the Samoan Quota Resident Visa, and he is looking forward to the big move with his family.

Jenny Iona, 26, Aleisa

“Because I know I will be travelling to Pago in the coming weeks, my New Year plans are to work for our family, our village, and the wider community, as I will be coming and going for the sake of our families. That is the main point of travelling to Pago in the New Year. I know that I will be working a lot to take care of my parents; after all, this is life in Samoa, which is to prioritise and provide for our families.”

Edwina Zac, 24, Malie

“All glory to God for His unconditional love for His children. I know there are only two more days until the New Year. Since arriving from Pago, we have used this time to spend with our loved ones during this festive season before heading back to Pago. I feel happy to see my parents since being back and look forward to spending all the time I have with them, especially in the coming weeks."

Alaivao Solomona, 60, Faleula

“For the New Year, I will just continue with the normal jobs I have been doing this year. However, there are plenty of new things to be done in the New Year, particularly with my family.”

Benjamin Ah Sam, 21, Vaitele Uta

“I currently run a business, and earlier this year I bought a car for the business. My main goal for the New Year is to buy a car for my family to help not only my parents but also anyone else in my family who needs it.”
