Dealing with dengue

18 August 2017, 12:00AM

The torrential rain over the past few days has led to the Ministry of Health and others issuing warnings about an outbreak of dengue fever. Whilst most people are aware of the symptoms of dengue fever, it is a timely reminder to us all, as individuals, to prevent what can be a killer epidemic from spreading. Lizzy Hunt spoke to a few people to share their opinions on the matter and to see if everyone is aware of preventative measures that can be taken.

Dengue fever is a dangerous disease spread by mosquitoes In fact everyone should be do their part to prevent these little bloodthirsty monsters from harming our health Everyone should protect their children and families because dengue can lead to death if not handled well and fast. I suggest that we all work together to clean up our rubbish and drain all those unused water collection areas so we can stop these insects from reproducing.

I think the best way to prevent the mosquitoes from spreading the dengue fever disease to people can be by keeping our environment clean, using mosquito repellents and draining any water that had been long stored in any plastics or tyres. This will  to reduce the ability for mosquitoes to reproduce. We should be aware of dengue fever all the time.

I am aware of the dengue fever outbreak and also its symptoms where people feel weak and experience nausea and vomiting. What we all must do to avoid such diseases from spreading, we should keep our surroundings clean, always refer to a doctor if you start to feel these symptoms as such disease can lead to death if not take cared of fast. We should all be alert at all times.

In my opinion, I think the mosquitoes are becoming one of the most dangerous species to harm the health of humans. They not only steal our blood but they are bringing the dengue fever disease. Sometimes some of my families have experienced nausea and fever as well as muscle pains which I think are a few of the symptoms of dengue. I would always have to do my part to help them, take them to see a doctor and make sure they’ll be ok. We should all be aware of this dengue fever outbreak and ensure that our families are safe.

I’ve noticed how dengue fever is spreading quickly in different areas through mosquitoes and it’s becoming a big issue. Although we use mosquito nets and coils yet they are not enough to stop the bloodthirsty bugs from spreading and harming the health of people. I know the only thing we must do to lessen and protect ourselves and families from such a disease is to keep our environment clean and make sure to cover up water storing containers and dispose of any plastics or tyres laying around which are a breeding ground for mosquitos.

Tasia Taii, 23, Salelologa

This world is changing as well as the species living on it. Mosquitoes however, are not only those biting little vampires who steal our blood but they are spreading the dengue disease everywhere harming and causing death to people. I am aware of the dengue fever outbreak and as I’ve heard about its symptoms where we feel weak, suffer fevers, nausea and vomiting, I think we should really take care of ourselves and our families, be alert whenever we start to feel these signs and wear appropriate clothing for protection and keep our environment clean all the times.
