Fatu Toa Gym to host 6th annual Toa Games

Since the competition was founded in 2015 more and more people have joined and taken part in the event.

The Toa Games was founded and initiated by the “Crossfit Fatu Toa Gym” with the purpose of promoting exercise, fitness and healthy living through a competition with other local gyms.

It is held every year – not only to celebrate the anniversary when Crossfit Fatu Toa Gym opened its doors to the public for the first time in 2015 – but it is also held to find out who is the fittest “team-of-four” in Samoa through a set of events that test various aspects of fitness such as strength, muscular endurance, aerobic capacity, speed and much more.

The co-owner of Crossfit Fatu Toa, who is also the coordinator of the Toa Games, Brendan Sefo said this year’s competition will for the first time ever since it was founded run for two days.

He said there will be 24 teams participating in the Toa Games this year with the most number of teams ever to compete since the games were founded.

“Before the Toa Games was usually held in just one day but now the competition is growing and attracting more and more people which is why we agreed to make it a 2-day competition,” he said.

The Toa Games is divided into 2 categories, the RX and Scaled division. Event#1 for the RX teams is a 400 meter relay and for the Scaled teams it’s 200 meter relay that will test their running ability.

Event#2 will be a mixture of running, lifting and squatting heavy objects while also doing some body-weight movements.

Event#3 starts with a strength event that will require all teams to see who can lift the heaviest “clean and jerk”.

Event#4 will test the teams with gymnastic, aerobic capacity and rope climbing (first time it’s been done in the competition.)

The fifth and final event is a mystery where the teams will not know what the event will be until the day of the competition.

The reason behind the mystery, according to Mr Sefo, is so that all competitors can be prepared for anything and expect the unexpected.

“A great feature of being functionally fit is being able to do anything without warning, and basically be fit enough to do anything without having the knowledge of what it will be until the final minute,” stated Mr. Sefo.

The 6th annual Toa Games for this year will kick-off Friday at the Apia Park Stadium at 5.30pm on the dot.
