Pure Indulgence from Australia walked away with the title for the first leg of the Neptune Pacific Direct Line (NPDL) Pacific Island International Tournament on Saturday.

The prizegiving took place at the SIGFA Headquarters in Matautu.

Team Graig Hopping was proud that his team won the first leg and was looking forward to the next one in Pago Pago, American Samoa.

"What a fantastic tournament we have this year. Every year SIGFA puts up a great tournament in the South Pacific, absolutely no doubt about that. We are just lucky that we won it this year. Simple as that," he said.

"I would like to thank Fred Wetzel for making this tournament what it is. One of the many people that I should thank tonight. If I remember Fred he would be up here playing his ukulele and saying "I love fishing. I love competition. And I love SIGFA. That's what Fred and SIGFA members who have gone before us gave us.

"I would like to congratulate all teams for a hard-fought week of fishing. It was not easy and I want everyone to know. Thank you Vaughan and to the executives. They have taken it to the next level and should be applauded for their hard work. Thank you to my Aussie team, fantastic."

SIGFA President Vaughan Simpson in his remarks congratulated everyone who participated in the highly anticipated NPDL Pacific Island International Tournament throughout the week.

"Great weather. Great fishing. Great competition, thankfully no accidents and no fights. Special thanks to our sponsors for making this possible, without them we wouldn't be able to have this. So, thank you all. Thank you to our overseas crews, for going through all the troubles, it's a lot of effort. It takes six months for preparation, thank you for going through all the trouble, it is much appreciated. Thank you everyone for a successful event."

Sally Olafaatasi Asafo broke the record for the biggest catch by a woman.
