Vaimoso retains shield
BAPS Vaimoso has done it again. They have successfully retained the shield for another week after defeating Vaiala on Saturday, 15 - 11.
The HPU field at Tuanaimato was packed with spectators from both villages rooting for their teams. It was a tough match which could have gone either way.
Vaimoso captain Faaliliu Mitivao Laititi said he was very proud of the effort his team put in the 80 minutes of the match. They knew it was going to be challenging as Vaiala was one of the best teams in the tournament. However, he was grateful that the game went their way.
"As I said last week, this is going to be our war as it's our big game, and we looked forward to it. Big congratulations to our boys and also to the Vaiala team for such a great game today. All praise and glory to God, as he owns the strength, and we were able to take this game head-on," he said.
"Next week we will face Apia, we are going to bring the same attitude. There was a disagreement early on in the game, it wasn't on the field. It was more of an off-field misunderstanding. But that's history, we won. For our last game, next week we will bring the same energy, discipline and attitude. We hope to cement the shield at Vaimoso."
He also mentioned that they lacked good decision-making on the field. He believes there were times when they needed to use the overlap but they decided to carry it. During breakdowns, they were very quick to breach it which gave away points to Vaiala.
Next week is the final week for the first round of the Taula Apia Rugby Union Challenge Shield. One of the teams that hasn't had any chance to challenge the shield is Maagiagi.
