The Vailima Faleata sevens tournament has been postponed to next week due to the bad weather conditions. Tournament director Lemalu John Lemisio confirmed this when contacted by Samoa Observer.

Faleata Rugby Union is prioritising the safety and welfare of players and that is why the tournament has been postponed.

String winds and rain have been affecting the country for almost a week now and the forecast is that it may continue until next week.

"We are mindful in case a player gets injured and they don't have insurance. But we are looking at having it next week, as we have to select a sevens team for the invitation from Mairst in Fiji on their 49th Marist Bitter tournament," Lemalu said.

The selection will be done from the Faleata sevens tournament scheduled for next week at Apia Park. The 49th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s is set for 20 to 22 March at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

The Vailima Faleata sevens will feature 12 teams, they are Afega 1 and 2, Faleula 1 and 2, Malie 1 and 2, Marist 1 and 2, Vaigaga, Toamua, Saleimoa, and Vaitele.

Captain for Afega 1, Johnny Samuelu believes it's a good call from the Faleata Rugby Union committee to postpone the competition.

"It's a good decision and also a great opportunity for our team. We had a lot of players who weren't available to play tomorrow due to other commitments. But with this postponement, it only means that our teams will all be available for the upcoming tournament," he said.

Other sporting events which were set to take place on the weekend have all been cancelled and postponed until further notice.
