The Tumua Maroons claimed the women's and men's Island of Origin titles this year with both finals in nail-biting fashion with narrow one-point wins.

The third match of the series was forced into a decider with the Maroons taking the first win and then then the Puleono Blues taking the second match. Coincidentally, this happened in both divisions.

For the men, it was a back-to-back championship win for Tumua Maroons. They beat Puleono Blues, 14 - 13. Both teams had scored two converted tries apiece. The Blues pulled a drop goal and led by one until the Maroons sank a penalty to break the Blues hearts.

According to the Maroons winger, Faaliliu Mitivao Laititi they had learned from last week's match.

"We won the first game in Savaii, and Puleono won last week. Our win today, we owe to God, our team, our families, and all our supporters," he said.

"We have been blessed with a win again, last week we lacked discipline, the defence and our markers were off. We trained hard because we wanted to defend our title. It was a team effort, we stayed humble, and we gave it our 100 per cent."

The head coach, Vaelua Tagaloa Robert said during the last couple of days they worked on the team's discipline.

"This match was really tough. Our team is good and so is Puleono. But I know there were some mistakes which could have cost us the game but glory to God we did it. Thank you to all our supporters, families, and friends."

As for the women's, Tumua Maroons has won its first Island of Origin title in a close match against Puleono Blues by 25 - 24. With both teams tied 24-24, it was a drop goal that decided the match.

Captain Virginia Iona said it was a dream come true for her team.

"The first week which we played in Savaii, we kind of went for long passes so last week, Puleono already knew our plays. They were able to spread their defence, and we kind of moved away from our game plan, which cost us our game. So we worked on that in the last three days, and it was great to see my girls play today. I am so proud of them."
