The Samoa Boxing Federation celebrated independence early Saturday Morning with a parade at Vaitele that saw boxing clubs from all over Samoa assemble in front of the Hyundai Samoa office.

The IBF World Cruiserweight Champion, Jai Opetaia was the guest of honour at the celebrations on Saturday morning, together with his family who also saw a few boxing bouts by local boxers as part of the celebration's program.

Local Member of Parliament, Papalii Tagaloatele Pasi Poloa, who is also President of the Samoa Boxing Federation, welcomed the world champion to the country and being part of the program.

Commenting on some of the local fighters who were part of boxing bouts program on Saturday morning, Mr. Opetaia said they had a lot of potential and he was impressed with the fights.

"It's good man, a lot of potential, they've got a lot of heart, just keep training, keep sparring and keep fighting (in the ring)," said the world champion.

"The more experience you get under your belt the better, it's all about experience and getting out there, keep working hard."

One of the junior boxers who lost a bout against an opposing club left the ring, looking down and defeated and trying his best to hold back his tears as he walked to his coach.

Mr. Opetaia made his way over to the young boxer and consoled him while congratulating him on the effort and putting his heart into his fight.

"We're looking at putting on a few gateways, giving these boys and girls more opportunities as well as a few more pathways for their boxing, and I am looking forward to see them reach their full potential," said the Australian-based professional boxer.

Mr. Opetaia continues to recuperate from an injury he sustained during his last fight where he took the world championship title.
