Police have confirmed that students from two colleges in the country got involved in a brawl that broke out in the bus stop area next to Savalalo market on Monday afternoon.

The students involved are from Leififi College and Saint Joseph's College, according to the Deputy Police Commissioner, Papali'i Monalisa Tiai-Keti, in response to questions from the Samoa Observer newspaper.

There were chaotic scenes in town on Monday, next to the seawall bus stop were the brawl broke out, attracting a heavy police presence around the Savalalo market.

Papali'i confirmed that the police attended to the matter in response to calls from members of the public.

However, she said that is the only information the Police can provide as officers were on duty during the students' clash had gone home.

Samoa Observer arrived at the scene and saw police officers and parents trying to help break up the fighting while appealing to the students to get on the bus and go home.

The bus stop area around the Savalalo market has become notorious over the years for student fights with a brawl in 2016 leading to the temporary shutdown of the Avele College to protect the students.

The fight in 2016 involved students from Avele, Saint Joseph and Faleata colleges and led to the former prime minister, Tuilaepa Dr. Sa'ilele Malielegaoi threatening to shut Government-run colleges.

However, a year later in 2017 the Police arrested 30 students in connection to a brawl in the Apia township, after the students from various colleges again converged on the Savalalo market and got into a brawl.

The measles epidemic in 2019/2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic that followed in early 2020 saw no major student fights over the last two and a half years until Monday afternoon's skirmish at the Savalalo market.
