Village leaders are walking the talk and stepping forward in terms of taking action to address gender-based violence using their tautua (service) and love and respect.

That is the view of the Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG) with the non-government organisation referring to a capacity building program that they are running for community leaders.

Releasing a statement on their program, the SVSG says their program is garnering support as well as receiving funding from the Samoa Gender Partnership Program (SGPP).

The non-government organisation said it also sees the program as a refresher for village leaders and representatives on their roles and responsibilities for a rapid response to calls on the helpline.

They also run through the "Do's and Don'ts" which must comply to the Samoa victim support group policy guidelines on child protection and domestic violence.

The SVSG is aiming to build a stronger community approach to the subject of gender-based violence and is impressed by the commitment of their leading SVSG representatives.

The non-government organisation applauded their proactive work in their communities in identifying the important needs for support in GBV cases, helpline responses, welfare or educational support.

The SVSG village representatives have provided welfare assistance for members of the community who have been impacted financially due to COVID-19, the most recent one being a family whose house was completely destroyed by fire.

School fees have been paid for some of the children in villages with the belief in the child’s right to education. Their Tautua or service to their community is out of love and respect for the most vulnerable in their communities.

The SVSG continueS their endless work in transforming communities and supporting them in creating a safer and better environment for children, women and mostly younger girls to grow and enjoy a healthy family.
