Island reggae artist coming to Samoa
Papua New Guinea singer Justin Wellington flies into Samoa on Wednesday and will hold his first performance in the evening to kick off his tour.
According to the Operations Manager of 106.7 FM, Lauano Henry Vaiotu, the singer's visit to Samoa was cancelled three years ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"He was meant to come to Samoa earlier but then COVID hit us so he postponed then he contacted me that he wanted to come to Samoa," Lauano told the Samoa Observer.
He added that the singer's visit to Samoa would not have been possible without the assistance of Fiji Airways and the Lifecon fashion.
"We have to also acknowledge the Fiji Airways and the Lifecon organizers for bringing him to Samoa," he said.
"I think this was also done because we have a real need for fun as COVID-19 shutdown has been quite boring so we opted for something lively and fun for the people."
According to Lauano, Mr Wellington is a friend of his and was in American Samoa recording his MTVs, but said it was too commercialised there and came to Samoa in 2015 and stayed at Aggies in Mulifanua.
"He fell in love with Samoa then," he said. "So we are all excited and we look forward to hosting Justin, as he is quite a talent."
Mr Wellington has emerged at the forefront of the music scene throughout the islands and has toured in Australia, Canada, the U.S. and N.Z. as well as most Pacific Island nations.
"His unique style and sound is an irresistible blend of reggae-pop, R&B and island music. In addition to that, his sort of music is heavily stemmed from his diverse musical influences, experiences and culture," Lauano added.
"Most commonly known for his worldwide hit 'Iko Iko' which featured as a #1 hit in most countries around the globe and top charts worldwide with his other popular hits like ’Island moon’, 'I wanna give you some lovin’, I need you so' and 'Island girl'."
Mr. Wellington is a professional live performer on stage or in the recording studio and has a big following on Facebook and Instagram generating over 12 million views of his YouTube music videos.
It is understood his first performance at Millenia Hotel at Mulinu'u on Wednesday night is part of his "Iko back II Samoa" tour.
