Heavy rain triggers flooding in Laulii

Heavy rain triggered flooding in the village of Laulii on Wednesday afternoon overwhelming roads and compelled the local authorities to issue warnings on social media to caution local motorists.

The heavy rainfall led to some rivers bursting their banks while in the village of Laulii the flooding covered the roads and went within the vicinity of family homes.

Children took the opportunity to play in the rain along the flooded roads while young people could be seen swimming in a river in Laulii despite the danger.

Vehicles passing through the flooded road had to thread with care while motorists with cars that were low waited on the opposite ends of the deluge for the waters to drop.

On Wednesday evening the Land Transport Authority (L.T.A.) warned the public of areas with rivers such as Fagalii and Le Mafa and to drive with caution.

The Samoa Meteorology Division (M.E.T.) on Tuesday evening had issued a heavy rain warning and flood advisory for all of Samoa.

According to the M.E.T. advisory, the heavy rainfall in the highland areas on Tuesday afternoon was due to the unstable atmosphere, with the assistance of the surface heating leading to flooding being observed in some parts of the islands.

"However, the convergence zone to the Northeast of Samoa is slowly descending over the islands," the M.E.T. statement reads.

"The system will introduce scattered showers, periods of moderate to heavy falls, thunderstorms and gusty winds.

"Henceforth the previously issued heavy rain advisory has now been upgraded into a heavy rain warning for all land areas as well as a flood advisory for all rivers and vulnerable locations."

Potential impact include heavy downpours with poor visibility and gusty winds, foggy and slippery roads over mountain passes and ranges and pooling near roadsides and waterways.

Other potential impacts include river flows and landslides.
