Masks, vaccination cards and fish at booming Sunday market
The Sunday morning market at Savalalo is proving to be a heaven sent for shoppers keen to get last minute supplies for their Sunday toanai - but wearing a mask and carrying your vaccination card is a must.
The market offers crops, vegetables, fruits, fish amongst other Sunday delights. On the second Sunday of Level 2 lockdown, Savalalo was crowded with sellers and shoppers.
Farmers and fishers were seen selling crops and fish to members of the public, while keeping mind the current Alert Level 2 requirements such as wearing a face mask while others had made sure they carried around their vaccination cards.
John Coffin who runs a coffee and breakfast business on every Sunday morning at the Savalalo market says that the opportunity for farmers and fishers to be able to sell their products on Sunday is very useful, especially for those looking to purchase something fresh for a Sunday toonai.
"It is useful because for the majority of people this is the only time, on Sunday, to purchase fresh vegetables, crops. There are a lot of other products that are sold here such as stuff for breakfast like tea," Mr. Coffin told the Samoa Observer in an interview on Sunday.
In his view, the Sunday market benefits a lot of people, as vendors are not required to pay any fees. It's an opportunity for him to be able to buy crops such as taro and banana to prepare his Sunday toanai.
Asked if he prefers to do his shopping on a Saturday evening or Sunday morning, Mr. Coffin said he like to buy fresh fish, which makes Sunday the best option
"It would also be good if small shops could open because right now they only open at 12 pm," he said.
With the Sunday morning market usually ending at 9am, Mr. Coffin added that is the best time as it will give people enough time to go to church and prepare the Sunday toonai.
