Bad weather on Upolu has led to landslides in a number of areas on Upolu that threatened to block roads and restrict access for motorists.

The Land Transport Authority (L.T.A.) has warned travellers to drive with caution in areas that are prone to landslides.

"While we are still on lockdown [Friday morning] here's an update on our roads from the bad weather we are experiencing," the L.T.A. said on its official Facebook page.

A landslide in Fagaloa on Friday morning came close to blocking off the road with a large boulder close to the middle of the road. It is believed there were no motorists on the road at the time of the landslide in Fagaloa on Friday morning with the State of Emergency (S.O.E.) lockdown still in effect.

A minor landslide also occurred between Solosolo and Luatuanuu according to the authority.

The Authority also warned members of the public that the Uafato Ford was not safe to cross.

The Samoa Meteorological Division (MET) issued a heavy rain warning and flood advisory on Friday at 5pm (local time).

According to the MET, there is a convergence zone within the vicinity of the islands which is associated with the clouds and rain, triggering heavy downpours with gusts and thunderstorms.

"The system would continue to maintain unsettling and unstable weather conditions for [Friday] tonight and [Saturday] tomorrow,” reads the MET advisory.

"Therefore, the heavy rain warning and flood advisory continue to remain for all of Samoa. "For [Friday] night expect scattered rain with brief heavy falls and few thunderstorms. Expect gusty winds at times."

The continuation of the bad weather in recent days coincides with the expiry of the lockdown at 6pm on Friday with the Government announcing that it is downgrading its COVID-19 Alert Level to Level 2 as it believes there is no community transmission of the COVID-19.

The country will stay on Level 2 for the next two weeks with Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa assuring that they believe there is no community transmission after all the frontliners were tested and returned negative results.
