The Police are investigating the death of a man in Lelepa, Savaii after he allegedly drowned at sea while fishing.

The Acting Commissioner of Police, Prisons and Corrections Services told the Samoa Observer that the case was still subject to an active investigation.

According to Auapaau Logoitino Filipo, the deceased is 27-years-old and the incident occurred on Monday.

“Police are investigating the death of a 27-year-old [alleged to have] drowned at sea while fishing,” he said.

The Acting Commissioner of Police told this newspaper that three people went fishing but one died and two returned.

“Police are currently investigating this matter but our initial findings reveal that the 27-year-old drowned,” he said.

“However, we are still investigating the matter just in case there was foul play involved.”

Auapaau said that the incident involving the death of the 27-year-old occurred on Monday, he clarified that their investigations have not ruled out the possibility of foul play but stressed that no one had been charged over the incident.

“It depends on the findings, if we will make a request to the Coroner, if the Coroner is satisfied in relation to the death because doctors are satisfied and have confirmed that the deceased drowned,” he said.

“But it is just a matter of [waiting] whether the Coroner will rule out any foul play and if it is confirmed [that the individual did indeed die from drowning].”

He also said that this is the only case this week involving the death of an individual that Police are investigating.

The body of the deceased is currently held at the hospital at Tuasivi, Savaii.

Police have reported investigations into a number of various deaths involving people going out fishing and drowning.
