Samoa to mark White Sunday
As Samoa celebrates White Sunday this long weekend, one of the messages shared by a mother of eight is that “children are a blessing from God.”
The celebration of White Sunday in Samoa is held annually on the second Sunday of October. It is a day where thousands of children across Samoa are dressed in white to mark a day dedicated especially for them.
Church services will be held with children performing special programmes in the form of scriptural recitations, biblical stories reenactments, and gospel dance performances.
Speaking to the Samoa Observer, Lofia Ilimaleota Meni said that each mother has her own way of showing how much she loves her children.
“The preparation of children for White Sunday is not new, I think that over the years it has changed,” she said.
The mother of eight said that for some people back in the day there will always be one white dress that can be used twice.
“However, I guess nowadays there has to be a new white dress or clothes for the children to wear at church, I guess as time passes it also brings new changes.
“As a mother with eight children, before the month of October even arrives, we parents have already prepared for their special day.
“I believe that what I do for my children they will also do the same for me.”
The 63-year-old added that if children are taken care properly, they will be a blessing to their families, churches, villages and even the country.
“Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.”
Well wishes have been conveyed for the children of Samoa from Government, political parties, police, and non-governmental organisations.
Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa on behalf of Government relayed that in the Book of Mathew 18:3-5 which states, “truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
“Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.”
Fiame relayed that a reminder for children is that they should obey their parents.
“May God bless all the children, and may you celebrate your special day with happiness and joy.”
Former Prime Minister and leader of the Human Rights Protection Party, Tuilaepa Dr. Sailele Malielegaoi also conveyed his well wishes for the children saying that his party together with himself will sing songs dedicated to the children on Saturday night.
The Chair of the Samoa Victim Support Group’s Board, Georgina Lui also wished all the children of Samoa a safe and enjoyable White Sunday 2021, declaring “know that you are special, as you are a gift from God.”
Acting Commissioner of Police and Prisons, Auapaau Logoitino Filipo also said that it is their prayer that none of the children will be affected in any tragedy during the long weekend.
