Police officers relax in sports day
Members of the Samoa Police Service descended on the National University of Samoa (N.U.S.) gymnasium on Saturday as part of their sports and remembrance day.
Members of the service held a more somber ceremony last Wednesday to remember the services and sacrifices of the men and women who have served Samoa over the past years.
The sports and fun day was held to acknowledge the contributions of the current officers and their families while remembering the legacies of former policemen who served before them.
The event comprised a volleyball tournament, a co-ed netball tournament and the children were not forgotten with games and prizes for them to play for.
Members of the Ministry were divided into four teams: red, blue, gold and green. The officers and their families wore colors corresponding to their team names.
The officers looked relaxed and happy to be out of uniform and in their sports gear spending time with their families.
Acting Police Commissioner, Auapaau Logoitino Filipo, said the day is a celebration of the service of the previous policemen
“Today’s Sports Day is in celebration of past and previous policemen’s services to the people of Samoa, we had the Police Remembrance Day last Wednesday and today we’re here to relax and have fun with our families,” he said.
Auapaau said the event is not about the competition or to find out which team is stronger than the other teams, but the purpose of the fun day was to encourage camaraderie between the different sectors of the Samoa Police Services through sports.
“The Samoa Police Services has been preoccupied with carrying out their duties since the last general election, so today is a good day to just relax and have fun with colleagues and family,”
One of blue team members Tautala Malu said it was fun being around other people from the Ministry, while getting to know each other’s family and friends at the fun day promoting good relations between policemen.
“Today’s not about competing against each other, it is more like coming together as a family to remember those who have come and gone in the Police Service," he said.
