At just eighteen years old, Pou Leuma from Matautu, Lefaga finds joy in cooking - a passion he was able to pursue at the Laumua o Punaoa Technical Centre in Faleula.

He told the Samoa Observer, he said that he never dreamed of becoming a chef when he was in college, however, when he registered in Punaoa he changed his whole perspective and determined to join the cooking course.

"I joined the cooking course because I knew I could do it and I will be able to make a living out of it," he said.

"Every day I hear other guys saying this and that about the course but I'm telling it's worth it. People consider this course as a 'lady's course' but no, it is a course for anyone. Boys and girls have the same opportunity, there is no such thing as an all-boys or all-girls course. We can do exactly what they can. These skills and knowledge can also be used at home."

Mr Leuma is now staying with his relatives in Afega because of transportation issues. He sees himself working in a restaurant for the next five years.

"For me, it doesn't really matter where I'll be working in the future as long as I can help my family financially. And with my course, I'll be able to cook for my parents, and also for any family commitments (faalavelave). Instead of them hiring a chef, I will be their chef. And throughout my journey, I have learned so much from my teachers and to cook many different dishes. It is a great skill to have."

Leuma urges other young boys to consider cooking as a career as it helps in developing families and creating a future for them.

"Do not look down on us (boys) who are taking cooking or sewing because we are just like you, we are also searching for a better future and making use of our God-given talents.  I hope to make a name for myself as soon as I am successful."
