Music keeps "natural accoustic talent" alive
Aleki Laban Toomalatai is one of the islands fewest natural acoustic talents who are still around, living to entertain the public.
At the age of 64, Mr. Toomalatai continues to let the sound of his harmonica and guitar touch people the way words never could and he has been doing it “all his life.”
Speaking to the Samoa Observer, Mr. Toomalatai from Matautu tai says he lives to entertain people.
He is one of many who earned a living playing at various local hotels and accommodations, before the global pandemic plagued the tourism sector in Samoa.
More than a year later, Toomalatai said the COVID-19 has not stopped him from playing, saying he believes it is his “talent from God.”
He said playing live in people’s backyard celebrations and private functions is enough to generate income as passion does most of the work.
Toomalatai also claims music is his medicine for any illness that he comes down with and hopes it is the remedy to anyone that hears his music.
"I will continue to play for as long as I shall live; this is my God-given talent," he said.
"I used to live in the United States and I did the same thing over there. I live to entertain our people, and I only hope my music brings happiness to their hearts."
