Various church denominations around the country honoured the integral role that fathers play in their homes, families and the broader communities in Father's Day church services across the country.

Samoa celebrates the holiday every year on the second Sunday in August. The celebrations were dedicated especially dedicated to paying tribute to all the nation's fathers and the contributions they make to their respective families, churches, villages and society.

Some churches performed skits and songs led by fathers while others had young people and children entertain the fathers present, displays that concluded with each father receiving a candy lei or baskets of food as symbols of appreciation.

The congregation of the Methodist Church at Tanugamanono was among those churches honouring the roles of fathers.

The children sang songs conveying their gratitude to all their fathers and the blessings they had brought to their lives.

During the service, Reverend Umi Pritchard, said that a father’s journey will be blessed if he puts God first.

He urged fathers to guide their families to Jesus.

“A good father loves his family and works hard to provide them with a better future,” he said.

Rev. Pritchard also relayed his concern about the growing numbers of violence against women and children involving fathers.

He said that fathers should represent love by protecting their families and guiding them on the right pathway.

The service concluded with children and mothers bestowing the fathers in attendance with gifts.

On the north-west of Upolu Island, a father from Mulifanua, Puefua Emosi Suluafi, was on his way to church with his nephew.

He was dressed in his Sunday best and full of enthusiasm on their special day.

He wished all the fathers of Samoa a happy Father’s Day.

Another elderly father, Samasoni Tala, said that Father's Day was more than just a holiday but a significant opportunity for all fathers.

“In my own view, the significance of this special day is to give back the glory to God for all his blessings not only for me but also my whole family,” he said.

The 50-year-old father of five said that he believes the day is not about gifts but attending church and spending time with his family - things he says bring him the most joy.

“It is more of a thanksgiving day; to acknowledge God for blessing me with many years to live and be with my family.”
