A 24-year-old man who graduated with a bachelor's degree from the Auckland University of Technology has spoken of the challenges he faced during his academic journey.

Richard Lumbert Kepu, who recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business, told the Samoa Observer that accessing finance was a big hurdle and he often had to move house.

“I had a lack of finances and I moved from family to family. I failed many times during my courses but throughout my journey I tried to stay focused and relied on God’s strength and wisdom to get me through it,” he said.

Earlier in life he said he aspired to be a policeman while he was in high school but that changed when he got into university.

“My dream from high school changed when I attended university, my whole mindset changed and I ended up studying business,” he said.

“I have a passion for hospitality and cooking. I dreamed of owning my own restaurant.”

It took Mr Kepu four years to complete his degree at the A.U.T. and he credits his educational achievements to each and everyone who contributed to his journey.

“I would like to thank my Kepu family here in New Zealand and to all my families and friends including the Vea family for the support they’ve shown throughout my journey,” he said.

He also acknowledged the support of his church pastors and families who he says played equally important roles in his journey.

“Thank to my family in Samoa and Australia too for prayers and for believing in me,” he said.

Mr Kepu left Samoa for New Zealand when he was 11 years of age and lived with different families, which is why he says his graduation is a dream come true due to the hardships he experienced.

He also used the opportunity to encourage Samoan local students aspiring to study overseas that they can do it.

“For my brothers and sisters from Samoa who’re studying in overseas countries, we can all do it.

“Believe in yourself that you will graduate and put in all effort to make your dream come true.”

A resident of Apia and Vailima, Mr Kepu is the son of Alofa Kepu and Beverly Kepu and also attended the Otahuhu Intermediate school and Avondale College.
