Truck flips in Thursday afternoon traffic

A mini white truck flipped onto its side of the road at Vailoa during a crash in late afternoon Thursday traffic.

The Samoa Police Service was quick to arrive at the scene to investigate the incident.

An officer, who is not authorised to speak to the media, told the Samoa Observer that speeding is believed to be the most likely cause of the incident, which took place about 4pm on Thursday afternoon.

The white truck was coming from the Vaitele area and heading into town when it took a sharp turn that resulted in a single-car crash.

The incident occurred right after the turn in into the Vailoa Gas Station.

It is understood only the driver was in the vehicle at the time of the crash and managed to escape with minimal injuries.

Eyewitnesses at the scene echoed the Police officer’s reasons saying the white truck was speeding.

"It's just lucky no one was seriously hurt in the incident," a nearby resident, who did not want to disclose their name, told the Samoa Observer.

"It's a good thing also no one was walking in the direction where the truck had crashed, because normally, many tend to walk along the roads at this time of the evening."

The truck crash on Thursday is the third such incident to have occurred this year.

Though, unlike Thursday's crash, the other two incidents this year resulted in fatal injuries including the death of a schoolboy after he was run over by a truck and left for dead on the side of the road in March and the death of a 25-year-old man who fell from a dump truck in Savaii.

The Police have in recent months appealed to the public to adhere to traffic regulations and to avoid driving if you didn't have a valid drivers' license, following a spate of traffic accidents that resulted in the loss of life.
