Police probe seawall car crash in Sogi

Police Commissioner Fuiavailiili Egon Keil says officers in the Ministry of Police are investigating a Wednesday afternoon car crash in Sogi that involved an unlicensed driver.

Photographs of the bizarre vehicle accident that left a white sedan sitting on top of the seawall in Sogi began circulating on social media Wednesday afternoon.

Luma Charlie, 23, who works across the street from where the car crashed, told the Samoa Observer she didn’t see the vehicle hit the yellow poles that form a fence along the seawall but she did hear the crash.

When Ms. Charlie approached the road to see what happened, she saw the car sliding backward on the seawall.

“I was so shocked. I was standing at the back [of the taxi stand] and when I ran to the front, I saw the car sliding backward and people started rushing out to see what happened," she said.

I didn’t know when the car came traveling down the road but I heard the crash and when I came to the front I saw the fence was destroyed and the car’s back tires were sliding backward on the rocks of the seawall."

“It was a girl driving the car…she could have been about 25...I didn’t think anyone was alive but I looked and I saw a girl trying to climb out of the car.

"She was the only person in the car…when I looked she was trying to get out of the car, she got out of the car and then stood next to the car. The family across the street from where the car crash occurred came out to help her."

Ms. Charlie works as an operator or “base” at the Tropicana Taxi Stand in Sogi.

The car, she said, was traveling to Sogi when it crashed in between 3–4pm on Wednesday “near the time when people are about to get off from work.”

“I was told that the girl was coming to the house next door there to have the headlights on her car fixed by one of the mechanics next door but she ended up crashing her car there [across the street] yesterday,” she added.

“I really thought someone had died in that accident. The driver, she got out and she stood there and it she seemed disoriented.

"So a guy next door came and took her back to their house. I was told that she needed new headlights for her car and that is why she was here. I have no clue how she could have got into that crash. I don’t know if she was drunk or what?”

Commissioner Fuiavailiili said he did not have all the details of the crash, but did confirm that the driver was a female and an unlicensed driver.

He said the driver did take a breathalyzer test at the police station and passed the test.

“She left the scene but later returned with her father or family member. I don’t know if she was charged but we are investigating that case,” Fuiavailiili said.

“There are no injuries that I am aware of but she was unlicensed and she left the scene.

"There appears to be no alcohol involved because we had her blow [into a breathalyzer] when she came in… police are still investigating and she could be charged for unlicensed driving for and maybe for careless driving.

"We have to wait until the investigation is done and then we will file proper charges if necessary.”

The Commissioner then issued a warning to unlicensed drivers to follow the law and don't drive without a license.

“You can’t be driving. You are not even supposed to be on the road if you are unlicensed. Get a license."
