The Samoa Meteorological Division has issued warnings for heavy rain, flood, deteriorating maritime conditions and strong winds for all islands.

In a severe weather information bulletin No.10 issued at 5pm on Monday (local time), the Meteorological Division says an active convergence zone southwest of Savai’i continues to be associated with the rain, strong and gusty winds currently being experienced.

“The system is forecast to drift further south by tomorrow, expect periods of heavy rain with strong and gusty winds and possible thunderstorms for tonight (Monday) mainly over Savai’i island whereas scattered rain will experience elsewhere,” states the weather bulletin. “Current wave observation remains at above 2.5 metres.

“However, sustained winds of 45-55 kph over southwest waters may elevate swell activities.

“Conditions may ease tomorrow while the system slowly moves Southward.”

The Meteorological Division also advised of a tropical disturbance (09F) which is located northeast of Fiji and is projected to move southward away from the country, though it may also direct high waves over Samoa’s marine waters hence the marine warning for vessels in local waters.

In terms of the potential impact, the Meteorological Division urged the public to watch out for: heavy downpours with poor visibility and gusty winds, foggy and slippery roads over mountain passes and ranges, pooling near roadsides and waterways.

There are also expected to be river overflows and landslides as well as strong and gusty winds with strong currents with rough to very rough seas.
