Vaimauga College has gone the extra mile to ensure students and teachers are completely protected from the coronavirus pandemic. 

They have done this by sprucing up the school, ensuring their facilities are clean and hygienically-acceptable.

With assistance from Parents and Teachers Association (P.T.A), more than 600 students and a total of 40 teachers scrubbed the classrooms cleanly, renovated and decorated their gardens as part of the effort. 

Principal, Faumuina Tovio Taefu, said renovation and cleaning work was initiated as a protective measure against Covid-19.

The competition theme was “prevention is better than sure”.

“Currently, we’re trying to keep social distancing and all that to combat the virus," he said.

"In reality, it is the school environment so we need to incorporate preventative measures to safeguard students and teachers.

“The school environment is highly vulnerable and the question is, are we prepared for it? Are the students ready for it?"

Hence, throughout the competition, the students were taught to use hand sanitisers and wear face masks.

The classrooms floors were wiped, painted and covered with carpets to prevent dust, gardens were cleaned and beautified.

The school principal acknowledged the endless support from the community through the P.T.A in assuring the safety of the students before and during the Covid-19.

Class Year 9 One was announced the winner of the competition.

A representative of the School committee, Tofilau Semisi Matautia, said they are pleased with how students and teachers responded.

"The most serious issue the world as well as Samoa is facing today is the Covid-19,” he said.

“So we thought of how the students will be able to stay healthy and protected if ever the virus comes to Samoa.

“First, we thought about ways to do so and we started discussing about the outside environment where it all starts before the students enter their classrooms.”

P.T.A sought assistance from donors, which the Principal acknowledges with gratitude.
