The first ever sports award night to be held for Pesega College was celebrated with a musical festival night in honour of their successful athletes.

The Principal of Pesega College, Brother Siakisone Taleni, gave the opening address for proceedings stating how long it had been since the college has conducted a musical night event such as this.

“This is amazing as it is to display what talent the students of our college have within them,” he said.

A quote from President Russell M. Nelson, reminded of the event's higher message: “Music has the power to provide spiritual nourishment. It has healing power.”

Health and P.E. teacher and coach for girls, Ms. Grace Schwenke, who’s bee teaching for almost 15 years, said that this sports night was a first for her.

Ms. Schwenke said that it is because a lot of their students have been participating in a lot of sports and especially the South Pacific Games (S.P.G.)

“We feel that towards the end of the year, there’s not enough time to recognise these students and the hard work that they have done throughout the year,” she said.

The students have been working very hard throughout this year and the school has built a good reputation throughout the local community as they’ve also made the church proud, she said.

“Tonight is all about these young athletes of rugby, and netball and basketball players,” she added.

The hard work of the coaches was also recognised. Ms. Schwenke said that she and the male teacher in assistance won’t be able to achieve all these successful outcome achievements without the help of their other teachers in the faculty.

“We would also like to award and recognise their achievement too,” she said.

In addition, they would like to recognize Maria Malo who has been one of the runners in the South Pacific Games.

“We also had Victoria Leva’a who has been to China but was not able to have the chance to participate in the SPG due to her age but it was a really good development for her throughout the athletics zone meet and champ of champs where she was the star,” she said.

Victoria was a runner who went to attend an athlete event in China, along with Maria Malo. Another player to excel included Delorica Joseph who played for the national league.

For boys, Tomasi Te’o was to be recognised for representing the school and Samoa for the recent Samoa under 18 rugby tours.

Announced as the Sports Person of the year was Maugatura Tuia as she has been participating in a lot of sports this year but wasn’t able to participate in SPG especially considering the academic side since she will be graduating this year.

“Tonight’s even, too, is motivation for a lot of the students that do not participate in sports and our teachers as well to come out and get involved in sports and showcase their talent in sports,” she concluded.
