Samoa Broadcasting Corporation, commonly known as TV1, is hosting the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (A.B.U.) Pacific Media Partnership Conference.

Chaired by TV1’s Chief Executive Officer, Galumalemana Faiesea Matafeo, the Pacific Media Partnership Conference is celebrating its 10th year, a significant milestone in the development of media in the Pacific Islands region. 

The theme for the conference is: "Safeguarding tomorrow: Building media sustainability in the Pacific". 

It is scheduled to officially open on Monday at the Tanoa Tusitala Hotel. 

The keynote address will be delivered by Deputy Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa. 

A.B.U. Secretary-General Dr. Javad Mottaghi, A.B.U. Head of Radio Olya Booyar, and U.N.E.S.C.O. Director Nisha will also give remarks at the official opening. 

This year’s A.B.U. Pacific Media Partnership Conference will examine sustainability amidst change from a variety of angles, including creating a robust broadcasting organisation strong enough to withstand the forces of change.

The conference will also target building honest, reliable and trusted news services in an era of fake news and reckless social media.

The challenges of technical transitioning – knowing what technologies to retain, what to pursue and what to discard - are also on the agenda.

But the transition facing broadcasters' audiences across the Pacific, one driven by climate change, has equally important implications for broadcasting, the Union says.  

“In the face of climate change denialism, apathy and limited resources, what Pacific Islands media can contribute to preserving a liveable planet for our grandchildren and their grandchildren [will be a key focus],” the organisation said.

"There is nothing as predictable as change. We now live in a world of exponential transformation, and it is getting faster and faster."

The conference will be a mix of formal conference sessions, showcases and practical workshops.
