Tufulele residents embracing spirit of the Games
The residents of Tufulele are ecstatic with their decorations ahead of the Pacific Games next month and the arrival of close to 4000 athletes, sporting officials and visitors from the region.
Tufulele couple, Faasula Luatuanuu and Luatuanuu Pili, who are the main ones behind the initiative, said it is an honour to come together and celebrate the spirit of the Games.
Not only that, it is an opportunity for their village residents to reminisce on the Samoan culture and its protocols that are starting to fade.
Mrs. Luatuanuu also spoke out about other villages not getting behind the nation in portraying and promoting the spirit of the Pacific Games.
"From what I see, it is only the villages starting from the airport to Apia that are emphasising the spirit of the Pacific Games. Although some villages are also decorating on the other side.
"But it's sad to see Samoan people, especially those in the rural areas not supporting our country, especially with big world events like these ones.Regardless of how much I spend, I always think first of what to do to make our country look like the Samoa that everyone expects of us," she said.
Mrs. Luatuanuu said it is not only about making the streets beautiful for the guests, but also about promoting Samoa as a nation capable of hosting world events.
Mrs. Luatuanuu said they started decorating during the Samoa Independence Day celebration.
This is also a great opportunity for the youth of the village to learn how to make a change in the future, according to Mrs. Luatuanuu.
