American Samoa has confirmed its top five fautasi crews following recent qualifying races, setting the stage for a major inter-island regatta to be held in Samoa during the nation’s 64th Independence Day celebrations.

The event, part of the 64th Independence Day festivities in Samoa, will bring together 12 total boats, five from American Samoa and seven from Samoa, in one of the region’s most anticipated paddling competitions.

Leading the American Samoa contingent is Manulele Tausala 3, of Nuuuli, who claimed first place in the qualifying race. In second place was Alao from Alao village, followed by Fuao from Vatia in third. Matasaua of Manu’a secured fourth place, while Fealofani o Samoa of Fagasa rounded out the top five.

The competition is expected to draw strong crowds and community support as fautasi racing once again highlights the deep cultural ties and sporting rivalry between Samoa and American Samoa. Known for demanding endurance and teamwork, the traditional longboat races remain one of the most celebrated events in Samoa.

Officials have not yet released the full list of the seven Samoa-based fautasi teams expected to compete, but organisers say preparations are underway ahead of the national celebration.

Once finalised, the combined 12-boat lineup will mark one of the largest fautasi gatherings in recent years, bringing together crews from across both American Samoa and Samoa in a high-profile Independence Day sporting showcase.
