1,000 nets to reduce dengue cases

Dengue cases rise in Samoa as new infections and cases of hospitalisation were reported and in a move to bring the cases down, 1,000 mosquito nets were provided.

There were 154 new cases recorded in the surveillance period 23–29 March 2026, including 40 laboratory-confirmed cases and 23 new hospital admissions. Since January 2025, there have been nine reported dengue-related deaths.

As of March 22, 2026, there are 17,778 clinically diagnosed dengue cases and 5,234 laboratory-confirmed cases since January 2025. There were 64 confirmed cases reported in mid-March in one week.

To help with keeping dengue numbers low, Samoa has received 1,000 insecticide-treated bed nets to support the country’s ongoing dengue response, as cases continue to increase in some areas. This support is provided through UNDP’s continued partnership with Samoa under the UNDP–Global Fund HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria Programme, which extends across the Pacific. While primarily focused on HIV, TB and malaria, the programme has enabled timely assistance to Samoa’s current dengue response.

The handover was made between the Ministry of Health and the United Nations Development Programme.

The nets, valued at $6,000, will be distributed to hospitals and rural health facilities. Priority will be given to admitted patients and children with confirmed dengue cases. The long-lasting nets can protect against mosquito bites for up to three years and help reduce the spread of the disease.

Deputy Director General of Public Health Services Auliaimalae Tagaloa Dr Robert Thomsen said the support comes at an important time.

“This support is timely, given the current number of confirmed dengue cases. While figures fluctuate, we continue to observe a steady increase in some areas, particularly with ongoing rainfall and weather patterns that create stagnant water—ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.”

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)Resident Representative Aliona Niculita said the UNDP has a long partnership with the Ministry of Health, mainly supporting HIV and TB work, and also responding to new needs like mosquito net distribution to strengthen the health system for communities.

In addition to this support, UNDP, through the Global Fund programme, continues to work closely with the Ministry of Health on HIV and TB initiatives, including community engagement activities targeting youth and at-risk populations.

The Ministry of Health continues to lead the national response through surveillance, treatment, public awareness, and community clean-up campaigns to reduce mosquito breeding sites. Officials are urging continued community involvement as efforts continue to control the spread of dengue across the country.
