Canterbury university alumni announce scholarships
The University of Canterbury Samoa Alumni Chapter announced a new scholarship on Monday night at its 2026 Samoa alumni reception, aimed at supporting Samoan students pursuing tertiary education at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand.
The Chapter, led by Chair Justice Vui Clarence Nelson, pledged an initial $30,000 to establish the scholarship fund. The university will match the contribution dollar-for-dollar, creating a fund of $60,000 that is expected to grow over time.
The scholarship is designed to supplement the New Zealand government Manaaki Scholarship, helping Samoan Manaaki Scholars cover essential costs not included in the original award. These funds could support travel home to Samoa during breaks and holidays, trips within New Zealand to enhance students’ local experience, or cover necessary study expenses, such as laptops and other electronic equipment.
UC Distinguished Professor Steven Ratuva, Pro-Vice Chancellor Pacific, highlighted the university’s strong Pacific Studies program and its holistic support network for Pacific students, including a robust Samoan Students Association.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have any Manaaki Scholars at UC this year. We aim to change that,” he said. “We hope this scholarship will encourage Samoan students to select University of Canterbury as their preferred destination.”
Justice Vui said the Chapter plans to host a golf tournament later this year to raise additional funds for the scholarship.
