PM accuses Lauofo of signing cheques to buy drugs
Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leautea Schmidt accused Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Lauofo Pierre Lauofo, of using district grant money to buy drugs in a heated war of words in parliament.
The argument over the lack of consultation before introducing the District Development Bill led to heated moments between Laaulialemalietoa, Lauofo and Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi.
It started when Lauofo was asking why no consultation had taken place.
The Minister of Women, Community and Social Development, Moefa'auouo Julius Tafuna'i, explained that there were consultations in all the districts before this bill was prepared, and the Cabinet FK has been used to explain this issue further.
Lauofo said he was still not satisfied with the explanation. He said the alii and faipule of each village are very important, and they should be used to select people to run the district councils, people who have served and lived in the villages for many years.
Prime Minister La'aulialemalietoa jumped in and told Lauofo to try to go to his constituency and see for himself that the consultations were conducted.
"Because the MP for Anoama'a 2 is still questioning the process of how this bill was brought before Parliament, now I am telling you the main reason for this Act is to stop the misuse of district funds, like the time when you became chairman," said Laaulialemalietoa.
"You signed the cheques, and for what? It was to buy drugs. People in your constituency also confirmed that a total of $97,000 from district funds was withdrawn and distributed for land lease.
"Your district council is one of the offices that has a pending matter for investigations on cheques signed by you to buy drugs."
Lauofo tried to intervene and said, "I did not sign any cheque; it was your representative who signed the cheque."
The Speaker of Parliament, Auapa'au Mulipola Aloitafua, told Lauofo that his time to talk was finished and that he would have another chance.
"There is nothing in the guidelines given that shows any lease, stop lying," Tuilaepa intervened.
The Prime Minister stood back up and said, " Tuilaepa, you have been saying this word so many times about me, and it shows that you are mindless.
"There have not been lessons learnt in the previous remarks you've made (e le'i fua se tapu), and you have been given so many chances and yet you still love to say this word to me, which shows your rudeness," La'aulialemalietoa.
"The question is, have I ever said a word like that to you when you were the leader of government?
"You are rude and mindless, and after the end of this parliament sitting, I'm going to put you in your position."
