No district money for Faasaleleaga No.2: PM
Faasaleleaga No.2 is the only constituency that will not receive its $1.8 million grant and the back-to-school support, announced Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt on Wednesday.
"There will be no grant for Faasaleleaga No.2 until they come and see me and discuss further agreements for the constituency and the Fono Faavae," he said.
He further said that the words used on social media by a matai from the constituency should not be ignored.
The disagreement between the prime minister and Faasaleleaga No.2 arose after the constituency protested the appointment of Magele Sekati Fiaui as the district council chair. The constituency argued that Magele was guilty of using district grants to bribe voters.
Laaulilalemalietoa then issued an ultimatum to either accept Magele as chair or no finances for the district grant will be released. In the latest development, Magele has been accepted as the chair by Faasaleleaga No.2, but the matai have declined to offer an ifoga to the prime minister.
Laaulialemalietoa said a matai made derogatory remarks against him at the office of the Human Rights Protection Party.
Speaking to Samoa Observer, a senior matai of Faasaleleaga No.2 said the constituency will not apologise.
"The constituency will not apologise and Magele has been appointed as chairman so there's nothing to discuss," this matai said.
"Faasaleleaga No.2 will not present an ifoga and that's what the PM wants."
